What is sexual harassment?

Sexual harassment can be non-verbal or verbal, and could be anything that makes your customers feel uncomfortable,

. Consent is the difference between flirting and harassment. It could be groping, stalking, verbal threats or sexual comments, overt persistence (e.g. not taking ‘no’ for an answer) homophobic language or taking photos without consent, sexual touching or assault.

 

How does Good Night Out work?

Participating venues must:

  1. Provide any existing in-house safety policy or procedure for review, or if none exist yet, take on the GNO best practice policies and procedures which we work with you to adapt.
  2. Sign the Good Night Out venue agreement and display the certificate
  3. Display official Good Night Out posters in appropriate areas (e.g. toilets) and display our training info in communal staff areas
  4. Agree to be named and linked to on our website
  5. Build the GNO approach into existing general safety policy through training offered by Good Night Out, either delivered directly (get in touch for costs) or through using our material
  6. Dedicate a segment of staff meetings to brief all staff on the policy and feedback on any issues to GNO team.

We want you to have a good night out. If something or someone makes you feel uncomfortable, no matter how minor it seems, you can report it to any member of our staff and they will work with you to make sure it doesn’t have to ruin your night.

This message is designed to recognise that every venue, pub, bar and club is different, striking a POSITIVE note without creating an atmosphere of unnecessary fear. It lets customers know that if anything does cause them concern, they can speak to staff and be helped, and then get on with having a good night out!

Policy and Procedure

We know that venues, clubs, bars and pubs are the experts when it comes to what happens on their premises. We also know from experience that having an agreed written policy and procedure, just as you would any other risk (e.g. fire, theft) is massively helpful for your staff.

We can provide you with best practice policy and procedure so you can adapt it to your needs.

Whether you are a small local pub or a large scale multi-venue organisation, the set of tools we offer enables staff to get on the same page when it comes to report sexual behaviour on the premises. We can also assist with discussions with licensing officers about anti-­social behaviour.

We offer a full training and policy support package to students’ unions bars, venues and shops across the UK. Each accredited union has access to materials, resources as well as ongoing advice and support. We train university and union staff to understanding, respond and prevent sexual harassment and assault, with a goal of creating a culture of belief and practical support amongst all union staff. Contact us if you’d like help with getting your university on board.
